The Posterior Rim Fracture of Vertebral End-Plate

Abstract
Fifteen cases of the posterior rim fracture of vertebral end plate who were treated in St. Vincent Hospital from March, 1989 to February, 1993, were reviewed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its causes, clinical characteristics and
treatment.
Eleven cases were mean and four were women. The most common age was third (40%) and sixth decades (33.3%). The most common involved segment was between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae(73.3%). Seven cases(46.7%) had traumatic history. The
most
common type of fractures was Epstein's Type III. Five cases were Type I and all of them were above 50 years-old. In contrast, all cases of Type II and III were below 50 years-old. Eleven cases were managed with excision of fragment and
discectomy,
and
those outcome were better than conservatively treated group. The posterior rim fracture of the vertebral end-plate was common I the adults ages and the degenerative or osteoporotic changes play major role in the etiology of the posterior rim
fracture of
vertebral end-plate.
